Head Start

Created in 1964 by the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) to give low-income preschool children experiences that enable them to develop fully and achieve social competence, Head Start is often described as one of the great successes of the War on Poverty. Today, Head Start serves as a model for early childhood initiatives nationwide and throughout the world.

SHORE UP!’s Head Start Program provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to services,  including education, health, nutrition, social services, and parent involvement. The program serves  1,041 children in seven counties each year.  A family-oriented program, Head Start fosters the parents’ role as the principal influence on the child’s development and as the child’s primary educator, nurturer, and advocate.  To enable them to fulfill this role, parents receive education and training opportunities that enable their families to move toward self-sufficiency, and are given access to special prevention and treatment programs.  In addition, parents actively participate in Head Start through staff approval, policy review, critique of new development plans, and learning alongside their children.
